Return to Yarm Roll Call

The following was taken from the Yorkshire Regiment website

Son of William Walker, blacksmith and Isabel his wife of Layfield House, Yarm; brother of Harold. He enlisted at Northallerton in Jan 1915 while living in Yarm and is apparently incorrectly recorded on Egglescliffe’s Memorial. A William Walker is recorded on the Methodist Church Memorial and as the family were Methodist it is assumed this refers to Edward William. Grand Ravine Brit Cem, France

Yarm1914 believe that Edward William was born in 1897 in Yarm. In 1901 the family is described as living in the Railway Hotel. This is now the Cleveland Bay situated just over the bridge in egglescliffe. His father Willian is a blacksmith and Edward had 2 brothers, Ernest Temple born in 1893, Harold born in 1895, and sister Frances born in 1899. In 1911 he was working as a farm hand at Hunters Rest Farm on the Urlay Nook road owned by Artur Maynell. In the four roomed family home in Yarm, Ernest Temple was a labourer for his father and Frances was still at school. They were joined by Mary Ellen born in 1902 in Egglescliffe, maurice born in Yarm in 1904 and Mabel born in 1907. Brother Harold was working at the Smith Farm called Holdenfield Farm at CastlelevingtonHe was killed in action on 27 September 1918 and his effects went to his mother Isabel.
